Sweets for Your Sweet This Valentine’s Day

We have all heard the old adage, "candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker." But if you want to make an amazing—and lasting—impression on your sweetheart this Valentine's Day, how about surprising them with a little something over the top? Here are a few outstanding, quirky, and memorable love-themed auction highlights guaranteed to make you the King, or Queen, of Hearts this Valentine’s Day. Helen Frankenthaler, Valentine for Mr. Wonderful, 1995. Image courtesy of Dane Fine Art Auctions. It's no coincidence that the word "heart" includes the word "art." Dane Fine Art Auctions of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is offering a perfect Valentine's Day-themed work during its Buds of Spring: Modern/Contemporary Art Sale on March 17, 2022. Titled Valentine for Mr. Wonderful, this striking book of seven love-themed etched aquatint engravings is by important and influential American artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928 - 2011). It is lot #0008 and is estimated at USD 32,500 to $45,000. The work, which is presented in a paper folio and cloth-covered box, was published in 1995 as an edition of 25; this example is number 15. It is also signed by Frankenthaler on the title page. The book features the poem “St. Valentine” by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet William Carlos Williams. Frankenthaler was a celebrated Abstract Expressionist painter noted for large canvas works that had a "spontaneous" look to them. To Frankenthaler, "A really good picture looks as if it's happened at once." Her works continue to trade hands in the five to six-figure range more than a decade after her passing. Most recently, her painting Leprechaun realized $362,500 with Heritage Auctions in June of 2020. Gucci leather pump shoes. Image courtesy of Hill Auction Gallery. Does your Valentine love shoes? Palm Beach Socialite

Hill Auction Gallerywill present a selection of fine art, decorative art, furniture, and antiques in the upcoming Palm Beach Socialite sale. An oil painting from Paul Jenkins will be particularly highlighted. An Abstract Expressionist, Jenkins discovered the effects of staining a canvas as opposed to painting it during a stay in Paris. Jenkins’ technique included applying oil paint or thinned acrylic to primed white canvas. Starting at the corners, he would manipulate the flow of colors by adjusting the canvas’ position. He used bright, bold colors in his works, and since he described himself as an “abstract phenomenist,” from the 1960s on all his paintings’ titles began with the word ‘phenomena.’ A key sculptor featured in the sale is Dominique Polles. Considered to be the inventor of Organic Cubism, his subject matter is almost always of the female form with twisting, truncated torsos. Polles’ female nude bronze statue will be presented in the auction. Among the furniture, a metal coffee table by Albert Paley will be highlighted. Known for the ‘Portal Gates’ he created for the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., his works take cues from the Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles. Time Capsule Opened: Bass Museum

Louis Comfort Tiffany was the founder and creator of Tiffany Lamps. He was also, of course, the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany; the founder of the world-famous jewelry retailer, Tiffany & Co. The intricately-designed Tiffany lamps usually came with a bronze base topped with a stained glass shade. Louis Tiffany intended to pay homage to the beauty of nature and thus designed the lamps resembling trees, with the detailed bronze bases, stands and shades representing the roots, trunk, and canopy. These lamps became the icon of the Art Nouveau movement. ‘Time Capsule Opened: Bass Museum’ presented byHill Auction Gallery, includes iconic lampshades by Tiffany Studios, but the highlight of the auction is a 19 in. x 13 in. Moorish bronze prism table lamp. Le Pho, whose painting is another highlight of the sale, brings Oriental artistry with the influence of contemporary Western art. The artist is known for his semi-Impressionist study of flowers and figures. The auction also provides works by Pablo Picasso, Frans Hals, Albrecht Durer, and Sebastiano del Piombo. Frans Hals is known for his technique, which is characterized by unusually free and powerful brushwork. Among his notable portraits is an oil painting, a 17th Century Man with a tulip, which is among the featured lots of the auction. The rest of the auction includes sculptures, furniture, photographs, and more. To view the complete catalog and register to bid, visitInvaluable.

Sublime Summer Sale: Picasso Ceramics, Murano, Lalique, Steuben, Leiber and much more…

Inspirations can be found in various places: sceneries, nature, a piece of music and dreams. Dreams, specifically, leads to the treasures of the subconscious mind. To one of the most important Surrealist painters in the history of art, Salvador Dali, dreams and visions were just the right tools to base his work on. Sublime Summer Sale by Hill Auction Gallery presents one of Dali’s most notable paintings titled “Dali Dreams”. Similarly, the auction provides a variety of promising items, combining works by Pablo Picasso, Theodule Augustin, and Dave McGary. While most recognize Picasso through his revolutionary paintings, only a handful know that he also designed 633 different ceramics. Among them is a pottery decorated with black paint which has made it to the featured lots in the auction. Theodule Augustin, whose painting is another highlight of the sale, brings about a dynamic realism and a predilection for complementary values to his artwork. The artist adored creating a sensation with portraits and figures. Rest of the auction is packed with American and Indian ethnographic, timepieces, antiquities, lamps, fine China and tableware, sculptures and carvings.
